Migraines

Monday May 24, 2013

Woke up with a blinding migraine. Weather changes always seem to bring them on even though I do not drink red wine and am careful about other migraine triggers. But you can\’t do anything about the weather.  So how am I (and Ralf for that matter) going to deal with our migraines on the Grand Adventure.  I have prescription drugs for them and if I get the aura I can usually take Ibuprofen to reduce the migraine to a dull roar.

Maybe I won\’t get them on the Grand Adventure – that would be nice.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday – migraines I really hope I don\’t get a three day migraine on the Grand Adventure, that would really set us back.

Well we will just have to cope with them as they come.  I am going with … Not getting them on the Grand Adventure!!

One, one thousand, two one thousand

Tuesday May 21, 2013

One thousand and one, one thousand and two, remember when as a child your Mum made you count the time from the lightening to the thunder so that you knew how far away the storm was.

Well that was what I was doing on my way home from work tonight.  I had been offered a ride home, but although showers were forecast it was not raining at 5:00pm.  5:10 it started to spit, then the heavens opened and as I got around the lake the first thunder clap – one thousand and one, one thousand and two, one thousand and three – pedal faster.  I took the shorter route home and as I was turning on to my street one thousand and oh thank goodness I am home.  It was close and I was soaked, but not cold.

Mrs SweetCheeks was dry and clean, before I was.

I am slowly becoming an all weather cyclist, however, we will see what tomorrow brings.  Forecast for thunder showers again.

Friday May 24, 2013

I cycled to work everyday this week, in all weathers – Today I got up, looked out of the window and white stuff was falling from the sky! Yes it was snowing.  However, by the time I got out of the shower it had stopped and a weak sun was trying to push its way out, the roads were not too wet.  I chose to cycle again.  It was a little chilly, I had my winter leggings on, thicker jersey and warm jacket – my feet got a little cold but I can now say I am an all-weather cyclist.

Mariposa for Lunch

Apart from the Midhurst ice-cream stop Mariposa has to be our favourite place to ride to.  Mariposa is in Orillia and is a great ride for lunch.  It is a round trip of 110 kms, but very easy.  Orillia is the mid-way point we have lunch and then cycle home again.

There are a couple of different routes we can take to get there.  Today\’s route was out Ridge Road and back along the Lakeshore.  The other route is to go up to Bass Lake Side Road and  back along the Lakeshore.  This is a hillier route, but still a good cycling route to take.

Mariposa is a great bakery, cafe, gift shop.  If we could carry cake home with us we would.  Maybe when we do this ride with SweetCheeks we can carry cake!  Although today on our way home, along the Lakeshore we saw some Girl Guides out selling cookies, Ralf had his Camelbak which had enough room for a box of cookies.  We quickly turned round and bought the cookies.

The weather was hot, but a good breeze.

You Wind some you Lose some

May 13-17, 2013

Not such an all weather cyclist quite yet !

It was a windy week, which doesn\’t stop me from cycling but . .  when I am cycling to work and it is primarily down hill and I am cycling hard to make 20 kph it is a tough ride to work.  However the upside is that cycling home I am hardly pedaling and clocking 26 kph that is a good tail wind.

I actually cancelled the Wednesday night ride due to wind-gusts of 65-73 ks.

To cap off my week, on Thursday I woke up to a thunder storm and Ralf took me to work in the car.  I know we will have to cycle in all weathers on the Grand Adventure, but it is still early in the season and I am a fair weather cyclist at the moment.

Chocolate Shop

This post has very little to do with the Grand Adventure or cycling, except for the fact that we generally cycle so that we can eat pasta, ice-cream and chocolate without fear of putting on a ton of weight.

This post is really about THE Chocolate Shop in Orangeville.  Ralf and I love chocolate and we really love good chocolate.  We discovered the Chocolate Shop in Orangeville a good number of years ago, while going to Theatre Orangeville.  Over the years Barb (the owner) has given us great tips on where to eat in Orangeville and we have become friends.

Barb makes handmade truffles and chocolates which are too die for.  We have of course told her about the Grand Adventure and although this time she wasn\’t in the shop to greet us, she left us a special treat.

\"Chocolate

I would argue that both of these little bars match the colour of both of my bicycles, so I should get to eat them both.  I think Ralf may beg to differ 🙂

May 6 – 10 A week of riding

It must have been a good omen for me to sell my car, the weather this week was perfect.  Lovely cool mornings and warm afternoons.  What a difference a week makes.  The trees are all in bud and sprouting.  The grass is green and of course the dandelions are taking over the lawns everywhere.  Spring has finally arrived.

I had a great ride on Wednesday evening – only one of the ladies was able to get out for the ride.  Tricia is a really strong rider so we had a great fast ride.  It was a bit windy but a lovely ride.  It is very different riding Sweet Cheeks and the Green Mean machine.

SweetCheeks is built for stamina and to go for ever, the Green mean machine is built for speed.  It\’s like driving a Pick-Up Truck and then driving a Ferrari.

Sojourn Tent Sale

May 4, 2013

Saturday was the annual tent sale at Sojourn.  This is a great sale where they have a lot of the big companies at the store and in the parking lot showcasing their tents – Big Agnes, MSR, Marmot, Mountain Hardware, Sierra Designs, Eureka.  It was great to be able to compare Big Agnes, MSR and Marmot tents all in once place and talk to the reps from the companies.  I had been doing a lot of research on the tents and had basically decided between the Big Agnes and the MSR tents.  When we could see them up close and personal, we decided that the Big Agnes was the winner.  Both tents were really good, Big Agnes was slightly lighter which meant we could buy the Thermarest cots for added comfort and still come in under 15 lbs each for camping gear.

We decided to buy the Thermarest cots for added comfort, but didn’t buy the Thermarest mattresses.  We decided that we would try the cots first without the mattress and see how warm/cold they would be.  We set them up in the basement with a sheet covering the cot and using the Thermarest Down blanket on top.  We could really feel the coolness of the concrete basement floor and felt quite chilly from underneath.  Decision made, we would buy the Thermarest Pro light for extra comfort.

Of course sleeping in the basement also left us at the mercy of our cat, Oliver, who is not allowed in our bedroom.  At about 4:00 in the morning Oliver decided that he would join us in the basement, of course at that time in the morning (according to Oliver) everyone needed cleaning.  Being woken up by a cat’s tongue on your forehead is not the nicest way of being woken up – so I moved down the cot a little bit, this is exactly what Oliver wanted, because now he had my camp pillow to sleep on.  However he didn’t quite have enough room so spent the next few minutes wrapping himself around my head until he was comfortable – needless to say I wasn’t very comfortable.  Then the purring started a deep rumbling from his body which seemed to reverberate around my ears.  Why I allowed this to happen I am not sure, I could just as easily have shoved him off the cot (they are only about 5 inches of the ground) but no I didn’t do that I allowed myself to be uncomfortable for another couple of hours while Oliver snored happily away wrapped around my head like a giant ginger tea-cosy.

Hattie Honda is Sold

On Tuesday after getting my snow tires removed and an oil change and service for the car, I was told Hattie needed new tires and rear struts.  Too expensive for me to put that money into her as I was going to sell her in May anyway.  I put her on Kijiji with the work that needed to be done and got loads of response.  She left on Friday evening, it was quite sad to see her go, but I think she has gone to a good home (lol).  I am now car free – that is good.  It forces me to ride rain or shine and may be even do my grocery shopping via bicycle.

\"Farewell

Fortunately the weather at the moment is perfect around 10 degrees (C) in the morning and about 20-25 (C) in the afternoon.  Perfect weather for riding and I am adding more weights to the panniers to get some practise in.

Wednesday Night Trek Women Rides

After attending the Wine and Cheese get together for the Trek Women that Ride road clinics, I sent an email to last year’s participants and reinstated the Wednesday Evening Rides.  I got a good response for the first ride on Wednesday (4 including me) and the weather was perfect.  This means that I can really follow my Century Training and get some miles in on a Wednesday.  I will be able to cycle my 20 kms to and from work, then 20 kms to and from the start of the ride and however many kilometres we get in on a Wednesday evening.  A total of 60 kms on a Wednesday should be good training.  They are a really nice bunch of ladies and hopefully we will be able to get a few more ladies out as the Clinics progress and they are more apt to go for a mid-week ride.

Trek Store – LBS

Trek is my local bike store (LBS).  In my opinion it is the best bicycle store in Barrie.  The service is awesome.  It doesn’t matter if you are 6 or 60 the guys at the store will make sure you get the bicycle that will suit your needs. I recently recommended them to a colleague at work who had not ridden in years.  He went into 3 stores in Barrie and bought at the Trek store because they gave him the service and assistance to make the right decision on a reasonably priced road bike that would suit his needs as a new roadie.

Ralf and I have bought all of our bicycles from the Trek store (5 bikes over 15 years). The only bike I haven’t bought from them is Mrs. Sweet Cheeks as Trek doesn’t produce a touring bike for my short little legs.

They have a great selection of clothes and accessories as well as some great bikes.

If I have a problem with my bicycles I often drop it in for the mechanics to have a quick look at.  I will drop my bike of at lunchtime and it is ready to go by the time I leave work.  Every year they do a great full service on our bikes and will always do a quick service before we go on our week-long vacations.

Trek also promote cycling with their Trek Women that Ride.  The Trek Women that Ride promotes cycling for women both for Mountain bikers and Roadies.  I will be writing about the Cycling Clinics that Meagan Broughton will lead in May and June.  I had great fun last year with the women and we also organized our own Wednesday night ride – just for fun.

\"TREK

The only disadvantage with the Store is that they only sell Trek bikes, but they do have a great selection. Check out the link for the Trek Store – it is  Barrie Store – Trek Bike Store Toronto – Aurora – Barrie.
